Die Herkunft des Namens? Parpart ? - the origin of the name*

The orgin of the name "Parpart" remains uncertain, although there are some theories in circulation.

Some of the available information is not of much help, as it was not based on careful investigation.

I read in some german books, "Parpart" is an old pommerian name, coming from the village "Parpart". This can be only a small piece of the truth, as there are 3 old villages "Parpart" and, since (circa) 1800, two new settlements "Neu Parpart". But where is the origin of the name from this villages?

Lothar Mildebrath wrote "Then a nobel 'Mildbrat" sold the village 'Parpart' to the convent Buckow..1271..".

This statement hasl been taken a proof of the existenz of the name in pommerania before 1271. But it is wrong.

The village was indeed given away, that part is (nearly) correct - but: its name as at time was "Parparino"

Some people hypothesize, that this name comes from the Wendish "Parperino" = fern. Perhaps so.

Reina Rule wrote in a San Franzico newspaper: "Parpart is a surname from Silesia and Saxony in eastern Germany. This name translates from the Wendish-Slavic dialect as 'From the place of the Ferns' , the site of the ancestral home".4)

Unfortunately in 1945 the chronicle of "Parpart c. Schlawe" burned, too - so we do not now know the inhabitants' explanation of how and why the name was changed from "Parparino" to "Parpart".

In another book I can read that in 1320 the village "Parpart c. Greifenberg" had no name, because at that time it was a domain of a duke (I do not know his name).

In this same book I read that a 1337 document mentioned a Knappe (squire) Nicolaus Parpart and a family "von Parpart" in the county that author believes were associated with the village "Parpart".

If this information is correct, 1337 may be the first mention of the name Parpart - although this needs to be verified.

We do not know the origin of Nicolaus Parpart.

I saw an email with the allusion to "a number of Parparts in the records in Neuenberg, West Prussia. They were obviously a Huguenot family, French from the 16th, 17th century..". This may be of interest, as there are similar stories in other "Parpart-families" - I will try to check out this information.
